Quick Energy Boosters for Moms

Having a hectic schedule can leave you low on energy and feeling drained. Instead of reaching for energy drinks and caffeine-filled beverages, take a look at the following quick, healthy and easy pick-me-up techniques, you’d be surprised at how effective they can be.   

Take a cold shower. 
Resist the urge to take a relaxing hot shower and try the following instead: when in the shower, alternate the water temperature between three minutes of warm water and one minute of cool water. This will increase your body’s blood flow, energize your muscles and make you feel awake. For added aroma therapeutic effect, use citrus-scented soap. 

Add some color to your day. 
The colors that you wear not only make you look good, they can also make you feel good. Research shows that looking at certain colors, especially red, can tangibly lift a person’s mood and make them feel more energetic and alert. The next time you’re feeling lethargic, put on a colorful red shirt or some red lipstick and see how it goes!

Put on some music. 
Listening to music you enjoy eases mental tension, stimulates positive thoughts and lifts your spirits, all of which can refresh you and put a bounce in your step. So when you wake up feeling sluggish or drained after a crazy day at work or taking care of your family, put on your favorite CD and let the music rev you up.

Stack up on carbohydrate-protein snacks.
 Mixing carbohydrates with proteins will keep your energy level up for a longer period of time, so when you’re cruising for a quick snack opt for  yogurt mixed with a cup of strawberries or blueberries, or peanut butter and honey on whole-wheat toast. Get creative and find other yummy carbohydrate-protein snacks that satisfying your craving but still offer healthy nutrients.

Massage your scalp. 
This form of gentle scalp stimulation can boost the blood flow to your brain and get you focused again. Simply run your fingertips from your forehead and temples to the base of your skull.  

Go on a 10-minute walk. 
If you’re too busy to hit the gym, put on a pair of walking shoes and head out for a brisk walk around the block. Short bursts of exercise get you active, boost your metabolism, and increase your blood flow, not to mention bolster your energy.

Shrug your shoulders.
Tension tends to accumulate in the shoulders, neck and upper back. To release your stress, take a slow deep breath and pull your shoulders upwards towards your ears. Relax your neck and jaw, and hold that position to the count of two before dropping your shoulders while exhaling. Repeat the process.

Drink a glass of cold water. 
Feeling drowsy? There’s a good chance that you might just be dehydrated. Get yourself some H2O instead of reaching for the coffee maker. Water helps eliminate toxins from the body and transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, which is great for getting you feeling better.
